Aegisbane is a unique, enchanted iron warhammer that is the family heirloom of Clan Shatter-shield, a noble family in the city of Windhelm. It is also referred to as their sigil itself by guards in Windhelm if they see you with Aegisbane equipped. Its enchantment deals frost damage and applies a slowing effect on enemies. Despite its unique name and heirloom qualities, it resembles a normal iron warhammer, but with slightly brighter metal. The Aegis was an object carried by Athena and/or Zeus in Greek mythology, either an animal skin or a shield. Either way, a sense of an implement for defending or protecting was attached to the Aegis, and over time it has come to mean a shield, either metaphorically (the symbolic protection of someone, an organization, or a group) or literally (armor, a shield, etc.). Therefore, the name Aegisbane means "bane/death/destruction of shields," a fitting name for a warhammer, whose blunt force was used to bypass the protection offered by plate armor, shields, and other martial protections.No links to Medieval Citations yet.
